12'
W. Rooney has scored a goal for Everton!
GOALLLLLLLLL!!!!! ROONEY HANDS EVERTON THE LEAD! Shades of 2002 for Rooney as he fires in from distance against Arsenal. It's not quite the same quality of strike, but it's still a fine effort to bury his shot into the top corner. We're underway at Goodison Park.
Everton lost 2-1 to Lyon during the week in an ill-tempered affair. Nabil Fekir scored an early penalty to put the French side ahead, but Ashley Williams equalised in the second half. However, Bertrand Traore secured the win with Lyon with a strike 15 minutes from time. Despite the loss of Romelu Lukaku, the club invested heavily during the summer, and their early results have not been good enough. Koeman can not afford another home defeat.
Ronald Koeman is facing a must-win match this afternoon as reports suggest he could be sacked if Everton lose. The Toffees are hovering above the relegation zone after, winning one of their last seven Premier League matches. Their form in Europe has raised the pressure, failing to win any of their three Europa League group matches.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Everton and Arsenal at Goodison Park.
Arsenal's four match unbeaten run in the Premier League came crashing down last week in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Watford. Per Mertesacker had put the Gunners ahead, but a late collapse allowed Troy Deeney and Tom Cleverley to guide the Hornets to the three points. Arsene Wenger sent another young squad to play in the Europa League and they did not disappoint against Red Star Belgrade, with Olivier Giroud notching the game-winning strike.
The decision to field a young team has allowed Wenger to rest his key men and he will be desperate to get back on track in the Premier League by inflicting further woe on the Toffees.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
Arsenal subs: Wilshere, Giroud, Walcott, Holding, Iwobi, Coquelin, Macey.
Koeman has made two changes to his side from the team that drew against Brighton last time out in the Premier League. Ashley Williams and Jonjoe Kenny get the nod to start ahead of Mason Holgate and Morgan Schneiderlin, with both players missing out due to injury. Wayne Rooney starts up front alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey return from injury to start for the Gunners this afternoon in three changes from their defeat to Watford. Danny Welbeck is out due to injury, while Alex Iwobi drops to the bench. Mohamed Elneny misses out entirely after playing in the Europa League on Thursday.
FLASHBACK! Everton won this contest 2-1 last season, despite going behind to a strike from Sanchez. The Chilean scored in the 20th minute, but second-half strikes from Williams and Seamus Coleman secured the three points for the Toffees, although Phil Jagielka was dismissed in the dying stages of the match.
STAT ATTACK! Arsene Wenger has beaten Everton 30 times in all competitions as Arsenal manager – more than he has against any other side during his time at the Gunners.
STAT ATTACK! This season has been Everton's worst start to a campaign since the 2008/09 term under David Moyes, although they eventually finished fifth in the Premier League.
The players are out on the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.
HALF-TIME: EVERTON 1-1 ARSENAL
It's all square at the break at Goodison Park. Wayne Rooney's strike from distance had put Everton ahead, but Nacho Monreal's effort five minutes before half-time brought Arsenal level. The Gunners have been the better side, but their frailties at the back were exposed by Idrissa Gueye and Rooney to take the lead. Arsene Wenger will be hopeful that his side can reaffirm their control of the match in the second half and avoid the critical mistakes.
The players are out on the pitch, so we should be underway again shortly.
FULL-TIME: EVERTON 2-5 ARSENAL
The pressure on Ronald Koeman has been increased by Everton's collapse in the second half. Their prospects looked promising early on after Wayne Rooney found the net to put the home side ahead, but as soon as Nacho Monreal equalised it went quickly downhill. Arsenal upped the ante in the second half and were clinical to put the Toffees to the sword, with Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette, Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez finding the net. Idrissa Gueye's dismissal helped the Gunners' cause, but they were opening holes even when the home side had 11 men on the pitch. Oumar Niasse notched a consolation, but the manner of the defeat will surely put the Dutchman under the spotlight.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
