Hello and welcome to our LIVE text commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Real Madrid and Malaga at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The home side will be looking to close the gap on table-topping Barcelona, whilst a win for Malaga will move them closer to a place outside the relegation zone.
A 0-0 draw to rivals Atletico Madrid last weekend has left Real Madrid trailing Barcelona by 10 points at the top of LaLiga. This has increased the pressure on Zinedine Zidane and his players, which has resulted in every game from now on being a must win if they are to get back into the title race. They secured qualification to the knockout stages in the Champions League on Tuesday after defeating Apoel Nicosia 6-0 in Cyprus.
Malaga won their second game in three matches last weekend after winning 3-2 against Deportivo La Coruna. The victory moved them up to 18th in the table, however they are still four points adrift from safety.
Today’s home side won both matches against Malaga last season, with them winning 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu and 2-0 at La Rosaleda Stadium. The victory away from home secured Real Madrid’s first LaLiga title since 2012.
HEAD TO HEAD: Real Madrid have won three of the last five matches against Malaga, with the other two contests ending in draws. Today’s away side haven’t beaten Real Madrid since 2012.
There’s just over 15 minutes to go until kick off, so let’s reveal how the two teams line up…
Real Madrid have made two changes from their last league encounter with Jesus Vallejo and Lucas Vazquez coming into the starting eleven. Marcelo will captain the home side this afternoon.
Malaga have also made two changes by bringing Diego Gonzalez and Recio into the side.
The teams walk out to an expectant atmosphere inside the Santiago Bernabeu. The game will begin shortly.
HALF-TIME – REAL MADRID 2-1 MALAGA – The hosts have a deserved lead at half time thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Casemiro. Real Madrid took the lead after Cristiano Ronaldo’s header hit the bar and fell into the path of Benzema, who headed the ball into the empty net. Malaga responded well and equalised through Diego Rolan, who controlled the ball and finished superbly to level the scoreline. Their joy was short lived, however, as Casemiro headed in from a corner three minutes later to restore their lead.
FULL-TIME – REAL MADRID 3-2 MALAGA – The home side secure the three points after a hard-fought match with Malaga. The hosts took the lead through Karim Benzema, but quickly found the scoreline level again after Diego Rolan equalised for the away side. Casemiro restored their lead three minutes later, however, to give them a 2-1 advantage after the opening 45 minutes. They seemed to be in control of the second half, but a thunderous strike from Gonzalo Castro made it 2-2 after Kiko Casilla failed to tip the effort around the post. The contest appeared to be heading for a draw until Luka Modric was brought down in the penalty area. Cristiano Ronaldo saw his penalty saved, but the Portuguese international was first to the rebound to secure a 3-2 victory for Real Madrid.
