We're underway at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the La Liga clash between Levante and Atletico Madrid.
It's crunch time in the race for the title as all three teams locked in the battle for the crown all play at the same time today, for once. Barcelona are in pole position on goal difference, but have a tricky test this afternoon at the hands of their rivals Espanyol. Meanwhile, Real Madrid host Valencia at the Bernabeu with Zinedine Zidane's men looking to cap a good week following their qualification for the final of the Champions League by ramping up the pressure on the top two.
Atletico have been in prime form over the past month in La Liga, winning all six of their matches. They struggled last time out against Rayo Vallecano as Simeone made several changes to his line-up, but Antoine Griezmann arrived from the bench to secure a narrow 1-0 victory. The club are level on points with Barcelona at the top, but have an inferior goal difference and will need a favour from either Espanyol or Granada next week to wrestle the crown away from Luis Enrique's men. However, they still have to focus on the task at hand this afternoon against Levante.
Our focus will be on Atletico who also had a good week by defeating Bayern Munich on away goals to advance to the Champions League final for the second time in three years. Diego Simeone and his men will have to turn their attentions back to their quest to win their second La Liga title in three seasons. The task ahead of them today does not seem great against bottom-of-the-table Levante, who were relegated last week following their 3-1 defeat to Malaga.
The teams have been announced and we'll start with the home side.
Levante have made three changes from their 3-1 defeat to Malaga, which sealed their fate last week. David Navarro, Jefferson Lerma and Joan Verdu come into the starting line-up in place of Zou Feddal, Giuseppe Rossi and Jose Mari. Victor Casadesus leads the line this afternoon for Rubi's side.
Simeone has elected to rest Griezmann following his exploits during the week against Bayern. Angel Correa gets the nod to replace the Frenchman in attack alongside Fernando Torres. Diego Godin returned from injury at the Allianz Arena, but he drops to the bench as Stefan Savic replaces him in the team. It's as your were elsewhere in the team as the Argentine has no new injury concerns.
The players are out on the pitch so we should be underway shortly.
HALF-TIME: Levante 1-1 Atletico
Atletico need to find a spark in the second half as they have put forward a lacklustre display at the worst possible time in their hunt for the title. The match started in the best possible fashion for Diego Simeone and his team when Fernando Torres put them ahead after 80 seconds, but the home side pegged them back in the 30th minute as Victor Casadesus found the net. Levante have posed a threat in the final third, while they've also frustrated the visitors at the back by putting numbers behind the ball. A season-defining second half awaits for Atletico.
The players are making their way back out on to the pitch. Changes are coming for Atletico.
FULL-TIME: Levante 2-1 Atletico Madrid
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Atletico put a valiant effort throughout the campaign to match Barcelona, but it has been just too much for them to overhaul Luis Enrique's men. Their exploits in the Champions League appeared to have take their toll on them today as they struggled to find the extra gear when they needed it, while their resilience at the back was exposed when they conceded a cheap goal in the first half. Diego Simeone will be very proud of his team, but they just lacked the energy today to take their battle for the title into the final match. Levante were good value this afternoon for a team that had nothing to play for following their relegation. They held firm after going behind and were a constant thorn in the side of Atletico at the back. Giuseppe Rossi's goal gave them a surprise win, but a deserved one for their second-half display.
