We're underway at Carrow Road.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Norwich City and Watford at Carrow Road.
It's a simple formula for Alex Neil's men tonight. They have to beat Watford and hope that Sunderland are unable to take all three points from their match against Everton at the Stadium of Light, which would send the battle for survival into the final day of the season.
Goals have been the main issue for Neil's men in the second half of the season. They have found the net just 14 times in their last 17 matches, including blanks in their last four games. Seven of those strikes came in two games, which has highlighted their inconsistency in front of goal. Cameron Jerome, Steven Naismith, Patrick Bamford and Dieumerci Mbokani have to find a way to supply goals in the final two matches of the campaign to save their side from the Championship.
Norwich were in a decent position at the turn of the year, indeed they were eight points clear of Sunderland after taking 20 points from their opening 19 games of the season. Had they continued that run of form they would have all but secured their top-flight status. However, in their last 17 matches Neil's men have claimed just 11 points, a worrying statistic for the Scot and Norwich supporters.
Home form is crucial to all sides in the lower half of the Premier League, but Norwich have struggled to make Carrow Road the foundation to build their bid for survival around. They have recorded only five wins at home this term, including one in their last eight fixtures. That will have to change to stave off yet another plummet into the second tier.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
Watford are playing a significant role in the relegation battle by playing the Canaries and Sunderland in the final week. The Hornets were tipped to struggle at the start of the season, but Quique Sanchez Flores has performed well to keep his side in the Premier League. Questions marks remain over whether the Spaniard will remain at Vicarage Road for next season, and his side will be determined to make a point that he should remain in his post with two victories to cap off a successful term.
The task at hand for the Canaries could be a difficult prospect as the club have lost their last four matches on the spin in the Premier League, which has left them four points adrift of safety. The problems emerged in a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last month that killed the mometum built courtesy of wins over West Brom and Newcastle. Their defeat to Sunderland looks to be the game that has put them in jeopardy, having sent the Black Cats on a charge for safety. They will have to put all of their problems aside tonight and battle their way to the three points.
Flores makes one change to his team from their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday. Allan Nyom comes into the side to replace Sebastian Prodl at right-back, while it's as you were elsewhere in the team. Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo lead the line looking to end their campaigns with a flourish, with Almen Abdi and Jurado aiming to supply the ammunition for the potent duo this evening.
The players are making their way out on to the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.
Norwich have made four changes from their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday. Sebastien Bassong has been dropped to the bench, while in the continued absence of Timm Klose, Ryan Bennett comes into the back four to partner Russell Martin. Graham Dorrans comes into the line-up at the expense of Robbie Brady, while Neil opts for a strikeforce of Mbokani and Naismith as Jerome makes way. Jonny Howson was ruled out for the season with a knee injury, explaining his absence from the line-up.
HALF-TIME: Norwich 3-1 Watford
Well the first half got off to a disastrous start for Norwich as Watford took an early lead through Troy Deeney. However, their response since the goal has been magnificent and their two-goal lead could well have been three or four goals greater. The Hornets have been all over the place at the back, aided by some quality play in the final third from Nathan Redmond. The winger got the home side on their way with a neatly-taken strike from a tight angle to restore parity. The 23-year-old was at the heart of his side's second goal as he cut in from the left flank and saw his effort denied by the post, only for Dieumerci Mbokani to turn the ball home from close range. Allan Nyom will have nightmares about Norwich's third as he slipped while trying to make an easy interception, allowing Wes Hoolahan to collect and send across the face of goal. Craig Cathcart was the unfortunate figure to turn the ball past Gomes to hand Norwich control of the match.
They're doing all they can to send the race for survival into the final day, but they're not being helped by Everton tonight. Sunderland hold a 2-0 lead over Roberto Martinez's men, which should the Black Cats win would send Norwich and Newcastle into the Championship. All eyes on the Stadium of Light in the second half.
FULL-TIME: Norwich 4-2 Watford
NORWICH ARE RELEGATED FROM THE PREMIER LEAGUE.
Sunderland's 3-0 victory over Everton tonight means that Norwich are heading back down to the Championship after just one season in the Premier League. They held up their end of the bargain with a strong performance tonight to hammer Watford 4-2. Nathan Redmond was impressive with two assists and a goal, while Dieumerci Mbokani netted a brace with two good finishes. Craig Cathcart helplessly put the ball into his own net in the first half on a night where Watford were not at it all, despite the best efforts of Troy Deeney. He was excellent with a goal and laying on a perfect pass for Odion Ighalo to score, but it wasn't enough for his team.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Norwich will miss out on the new lucrative television deal that comes into play next season and the club will have a lot of decisions to make over the summer to prepare for life in the second tier. The truth is that they have simply not been good enough in the second half of the campaign, taking just 14 points from their last 18 games, which has cost them their place in the Premier League. Alex Neil looks still to be the right man to lead the club, and the Canaries can look no further than the example of Burnley on how to bounce back immediately. Disappointment for now, but there could be hope for the future at Carrow Road.
