Mexico get us underway!
Hello and welcome to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California for the CONCACAF Gold Cup clash between Mexico and El Salvador.
Mexico are the defending champions and have claimed the trophy in three of the past four editions. However, they have a weakened squad in the United States due to their participation at the Confederations Cup in Russia.
El Salvador (4-4-2): Villalobos; Tamacas, Romero, Mancia, Larin; Mayen, Orellana, Ceren, Flores; Zelaya, Bonilla
Mexico are of course also without head coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who received a six-game ban for abuse of match officials during a clash against Portugal in Russia.
That marks five changes to the Mexico starting XI that beat Paraguay 2-1 earlier this month. Alan Pulido broke his arm in that game and will miss more than four months. Sepulveda starts up front, while Ayala, Alvarez, Jorge Hernandez and Reyes also come in. El Salvador were last in action in mid-June, losing 3-0 to Ecuador in a friendly.
This is the opening game for both teams at this year's tournament, with Jamaica having beaten Curacao 2-0 in the earlier Group C clash.
HALF-TIME: Mexico 2-1 El Salvador. An entertaining opening 45 minutes in California! A header from Marin gave Mexico the lead, only for El Salvador to respond immediately through Bonilla. But Elias Hernandez – who set up the opener – volleyed in to restore Mexico's lead in the 29th minute. Both teams have had their chances, with El Salvador pushing the defending champions.
FULL-TIME: Mexico 3-1 El Salvador. It was comfortable in the end for the defending champions, but they were troubled early. Marin headed in the opener before Bonilla’s immediate response for El Salvador. But Elias Hernandez and Pineda struck either side of half-time to seal a win in Group C. Hernandez finished the encounter with a goal and two assists in an impressive display. Mexico are back in action against Jamaica on Thursday, while El Salvador face Curacao.
