We're off! Arsenal get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Stoke City and Arsenal at the Bet365 Stadium.
After three successive top-half finishes for Stoke, last season was meant to be the one that saw them push for European qualification. It wasn’t to be, however, as a disappointing campaign resulted in them finishing with their second-lowest points tally since reaching the top flight. As a result, the pressure is on Mark Hughes to deliver this season if he’s to get some of the disgruntled Stoke fans off his back.
Stoke’s start to the new campaign didn’t quite go as planned, however, as they were unable to get the better of Everton and had to leave Goodison Park empty handed. A lack of attacking options meant that the Potters struggled inside the final third of the pitch, but that’s an issue they’ll be hoping to have sorted out with the acquisition of Jese Rodriguez, who is set to start today.
As for Arsenal, they were involved in arguably one of the best games of the opening weekend, and it’s one that eventually went their way. After initially taking the lead after just two minutes only to have to come from behind twice, the Gunners scored twice in the final 10 minutes to beat Leicester City 4-3 and start their season with a much-needed, morale-boosting victory.
New signing Alexandre Lacazette opened his Arsenal account with their first goal of the game, and the Gunners certainly looked sharper up front with him in the team. They struggled slightly at the back, however, and they’ll be hoping to pull off a better defensive performance today as they go in search of their first clean sheet of the new season.
Arsenal have traditionally dominated this fixture in recent seasons, with Stoke only managing to win one of the previous six meetings between the two teams. The Gunners will certainly be hoping for a similar result to the one they managed to pick up in last season’s corresponding fixture, as they comfortably thumped the Potters towards the end of the campaign to leave with a 4-1 victory.
Mark Hughes has decided to make two changes to the Stoke side that started the defeat against Everton on the opening weekend, with new signings Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Jese Rodriguez coming into the starting line-up to replace Bojan and Saido Berahino, respectively.
Arsenal substitutes: Ospina, Mertesacker, Coquelin, Elneny, Iwobi, Walcott, Giroud.
Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Cech; Kolasinac, Mustafi, Monreal; Bellerin, Xhaka, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Ozil, Lacazette, Welbeck.
Stoke City XI (3-4-1-2): Butland; Zouma, Shawcross, Cameron; Diouf, Allen, Fletcher, Pieters; Shaqiri; Choupo-Moting, Jese.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: STOKE CITY 0-0 ARSENAL
It's been a slightly disappointing game for both sides so far, with neither managing to carve out many clear-cut chances on goal. Arsenal have arguably been the better of the two thanks to some nice play inside the final third of the pitch, but Butland hasn't been called into action as much as he may have been expecting.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: STOKE CITY 1-0 ARSENAL
They struggled last weekend, but Stoke deservedly leave with their first Premier League win of the season thanks to a debut goal from Jese. Arsenal dominated possession and constantly put pressure on the Potters' back line, but no matter what they tried to do they just couldn't seem to get the better of Butland.
Stoke now face a potentially tough game against West Bromwich Albion after taking on Rochdale in the cup during the week, whilst Arsenal will travel to Liverpool in what should be an absolutely excellent contest.
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has also made two alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Rob Holding and Mohamed Elneny making way for Shkodran Mustafi and Aaron Ramsey.
