We're underway at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico will have watched with disappointment on Saturday as Barcelona rallied to defeat Sevilla. The Catalan club are 10 points ahead of Diego Simeone's men in the table, although that gap can close to seven with a victory for Los Rojiblancos today. Atletico got back to winning ways in LaLiga last time out against Rayo Vallecano after previously suffering back-to-back defeats to Real Betis and Real Madrid. The club need to keep the pressure on their rivals at the top with another win.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga clash between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Villarreal are in the scrap at the other end of the table, sitting in the relegation zone in 18th place. The club are two points adrift of safety, although they have enjoyed a recent good run of results. Javier Calleja's men are unbeaten in three matches, including a 3-0 triumph over Sevilla last time out. They will need to channel the same level of performance this afternoon.
Villarreal have been in the game, but were undone by a piece of quality from the home side. They have had their moments in the final third, although they've not been clinical enough. Javier Calleja needs more from his attacking players to get a positive result out of the contest.
Atletico are next in action in LaLiga next week against Real Sociedad on the road, while Villarreal play Deportivo Alaves at home.
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
