Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.
City made a statement in their opening match of the season, hammering West Ham United 5-0 on the road. A hat-trick from Raheem Sterling along with strikes from Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero handed the defending champions the perfect start to the term. They will now look to build on that result against a potential challenger for their crown Tottenham.
Spurs had to display resilience in the first week of the campaign, battling back from 1-0 down to beat Aston Villa at home. John McGinn had put the Villans ahead in the first half, but Tanguy Ndombele led the fightback with an equaliser before a Harry Kane brace secured the three points. Mauricio Pochettino's men defeated City in the Champions League quarter-finals last season, but now need to prove a point in the Premier League to display their title credentials.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, Aymeric Laporte, Oleksandr Zinchenko; Ilkay Gundogan, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne; Bernardo Silva, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling.
MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Claudio Bravo, Gabriel Jesus, David Silva, Fernandinho, Riyad Mahrez, Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden.
TOTTENHAM (4-3-2-1): Hugo Lloris; Kyle Walker-Peters, Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose; Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele; Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen; Harry Kane.
TOTTENHAM SUBS: Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Giovano Lo Celso, Paulo Gazzaniga, Lucas Moura, Oliver Skipp, Ben Davies.
Tottenham were below-par for the opening 20 minutes and were punished by Sterling. The goal seemed to jolt them into life as Lamela quickly equalised and they controlled proceedings for a spell. However, a lapse at the back allowed Aguero to pounce, leaving Spurs with an uphill challenge in the second half. They need more Eriksen and Kane in the final third to get them back into the contest once again.
City are next in action on the road against Bournemouth next Sunday, while Tottenham take on Newcastle at home next week.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
