It was an unhappy return to Villa Park for Steve Bruce on Monday, with Newcastle suffering a 2-0 defeat against his former side, to leave them 14th in the table. Prior to the defeat against Villa, the Magpies have been on a three game unbeaten run, beating West Ham and Bournemouth and drawing with Wolves.
Meanwhile City bounced back from their defeat against Liverpool before the international break, to beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Etihad and move back up to third in the table. However, they could only draw 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League in midweek, but this was enough to secure qualification to the knockout stages.
