An optimistic shot from the left by Zaniolo is headed up and away for a corner by Alaba, defending deep inside his box. However, Italy waste the chance to cross and Austria storm straight up the other end on a counter-attack which eventually runs out of steam inside the area.
90'
F. Miretti enters the game and replaces N. Barella.
After a frustrating shift in midfield, Barella comes off. Juventus prospect Miretti is offered a brief cameo in his place.
87'
S. Posch gets yellow.
A reckless sliding challenge on Barella by the touchline earns Posch a yellow card.
85'
Chiesa's corner from the right is cleared away easily at the near post, but when the ball is recycled it drops to Dimarco on the edge of the box. With few other options open, the wing-back slashes at an awful shot which careers well over the goalframe.
83'
From Dimarco's free-kick, deep on the left side of the Austria half, a wayward header by Scalvini bounds several yards wide of the target, as Italy's fruiless quest for a goal goes on.
81'
F. Grillitsch enters the game and replaces C. Baumgartner.
R. Schmid enters the game and replaces J. Adamu.
Austria replace Adamu with Schmid for the final stages of the game.
Rangnick also adds some fresh legs in midfield: Baumgartner makes way for Grillitsch.
JUST OVER! A thrusting run down the left by Zaniolo ends with the Roma forward clipping a ball across to the centre, where Chiesa arrives first and then drives a shot narrowly over the top!
78'
Again popping up in a dangerous position on the left side if the area, Sabitzer finds himself thwarted by the alert defending of substitute Scalvini. That results in an Austria corner, but they can't make much of the set-piece situation.

Minute
Description
69'
Chiesa wins a free-kick high up on the left flank, but Italy fail to make anyhting of the set-piece opportunity. Austria clear their lines.
67'
This time, Chiesa skips away from Posch around 20 yards out from goal, but the winger's curling shot lacks accuracy and scuds harmlessly wide of the target.
66'
F. Chiesa gets yellow.
After gifting the ball to Posch in the Austria area, a frustrated Chiesa clips his opponent with a late challenge and is then shown a yellow card.
65'
Despite being on a yellow card, Siewald stays the pace in a one-to-one race with Zaniolo down the left side of Austria's defence; clearing the ball away with a precise intervention just outside the area.
63'
A misdirected low cross from the left side of the box by Dimarco is easily claimed low down by Lindner, and that's another example of Italy's lack of quality in the final so far third today.
61'
Rather ludicrously, Bonucci winds one up from almost 30 yards out, and sends his effort sailing far over the crossbar - a strange choice by the Azzurri skipper.
59'
Italy, boosted by their half-time changes, are enjoying their best spell of pressure now, as they seek a way back into this game.
57'
Following Dimarco's cross into the box from the left, which is only partly cleared, Barella mishits an ambitious attempt from more than 25 yards out and sends it skipping way wide of the left-hand post.
55'
After Arnautovic has a shot blocked from the left side of the box, Sabitzer steers a shot well over the crossbar.
54'
Having been limping for the past couple of minutes, Barella fires off-target from the edge of the area. It's not certain the Inter midfielder will complete this game.
52'
Following on from his wayward finishing on Wednesday in Tirana, half-time sub Zaniolo slashes at a volleyed attempt from 10 yards - following Dimarco's cross from the left - and sees it spiral over the crossbar!
50'
Chiesa receives the ball from Zaniolo in the Austria area, but his attempted cutback is cleared away for a corner. From Raspadori's subsequent cross, Italy are awarded another.
46'
M. Pessina enters the game and replaces F. Gatti.
F. Chiesa enters the game and replaces M. Politano.
G. Scalvini enters the game and replaces G. Di Lorenzo.
N. Zaniolo enters the game and replaces V. Grifo.
Mancini has clearly not been impressed - there are four changes to the Italy team for the second half! First, Gatti makes way for Pessina.
Italy kick off, and we are back under way at Ernst Happel Stadion!
Chiesa replaces Politano on the right flank.
Youngster Scalvini comes on for Napoli captain Di Lorenzo.
Finally, Grifo is replaced by Zaniolo.
45' +3
HALF-TIME: AUSTRIA 2-0 ITALY
45' +2
Dimarco's whipped ball from the left is headed away from the area under little pressure by Wober, as the game winds down towards the half-time whistle.
45'
Having landed awkwardly on his arm, out on the right flank, Di Lorenzo requires treatment. He will be assessed on the side of the pitch while the action continues.
43'
As Posch brings the ball out of defence and into the Italy half, Dimarco clips the Bologna defender's heels and concedes a free-kick.
39'
Both Di Lorenzo and Barella fail to make the most of having the ball in space inside the Austria area; allowing Lienhart to ultimately complete a clearance.
35'
D. Alaba has scored a goal for Austria!
INCREDIBLE STRIKE!! An absolute thunderbolt puts Austria two goals ahead, as Alaba powers an unstoppable free-kick past Donnarumma from 20 yards! The Real Madrid defender stepped up to the set-piece and fired a dipping effort into the very top of the goal; beating the giant keeper by guiding the ball in off the underside of the crossbar! Austria 2-0 Italy, and it's fully deserved!
29'
Cleverly, Alaba's last-ditch clearance inside his own six-yard box is played off the advancing Raspadori and earns Austria a goal-kick. Italy have barely shown any attacking cohesion so far, while their hosts are flying forward relentlessly.
27'
There's no doubt Arnautovic is targeting the hapless Gatti now, as he sprints straight at the Juventus defender, throws a few stepovers and then slings across a dangerous ball for Adamu, which the wing-back can't quite make meaningful contact on.
25'
Following the pause for Sabitzer's assessment, the action resumes, and a few seconds later the RB Leipzig man returns to the fray.
23'
Sabitzer is felled by an aggressive aerial challenge from Gatti, and he landed heavily. The game therefore comes to a halt as the Austria midfielder receives medical attention.
21'
Arnautovic is clearly enjoying himself today, as he puts the Italian defence on the back foot again with a positive run - this time through the centre - and sees a powerful shot charged down at close range.
19'
After Alaba is forced to concede a corner on the right, Gatti's header from Politano's outswinging corner to the far post is skewed wide of the target by some distance.
17'
A mix-up between Barella and Gatti almost allows Austria in down the left again, and the phase of play ultimately ends up with Italy conceding a corner. The Azzurri are ailing!
12'
N. Seiwald gets yellow.
A sliding challenge from Verratti in midfield is met by Seiwald's studs on his ankle, and the Austria midfielder is justifiably booked.
11'
Lindner makes a routine save from Grifo's effort, which was too central to cause any real difficulty for the Austria goalkeeper.
10'
After Alaba cuts the ball back from the right byline, Baumgartner trickles a rather harmless shot straight at Donnarumma from the edge of the area.
6'
X. Schlager has scored a goal for Austria! Assist by M. Arnautović.
AUSTRIA LEAD! An emphatic finish puts the hosts ahead! Schlager steals the ball from Verratti in midfield, then races forward to latch on to Arnautovic's low pass into the box; steering the ball in by the left-hand post with a low shot that Donnarumma can only get a toe to! 1-0!
The familiar figure of Arnautovic taunts the Italy defence with a couple of stepovers and marauds towards the area; releasing the ball precisely for Schlager to strike.
5'
A mazy run by Barella towards the edge of the Austria area is only stopped by smart defending from Lienhart, who then clears away under pressure from a lurking Raspadori.
3'
Di Lorenzo loses the ball high up on the right flank by choosing the wrong pass, but following Austria's counter-attack, Donnarumma comes out to claim a loose ball inside his area.
1'
Austria kick off, and we are under way in Vienna!
An end-to-end start sees Austria have an optimistic penalty claim turned down before Italy break down the left through Dimarco, whose low cross into the box is cleared away by Alaba on the stretch. That's an early corner for the visitors.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of today's international friendly match between Austria and Italy in Vienna!
Missing out on a first World Cup appearance since 1998, Austria's absence from the world stage continues due to a 2-1 defeat against Wales in the qualification playoffs earlier this year. Following that failure, Ralf Rangnick stepped in as head coach and won his first match in charge, away to Croatia, but then failed to win any of five subsequent fixtures in League A of the Nations League; resulting in the Austrians' demotion to Europe's second tier. More recently, they edged past tiny Andorra in midweek, with a 1-0 victory only secured in the 87th minute, thanks to talisman Marko Arnautovic.
Following their failure to reach the World Cup for a second time in succession - this time due to a humbling playoff defeat against North Macedonia - Italy were then well beaten by both Argentina and Germany. However, the Azzurri more recently enjoyed some Nations League success, having embarked on a three-game winning streak that propelled them into its final stages once again. In Tirana on Wednesday evening, Roberto Mancini's men beat Albania 3-1, as several young guns were blooded for the first time at senior level.
AUSTRIA (3-4-2-1): Heinz Lindner; Maximilian Wober, Stefan Posch, Philipp Lienhart; Junior Adamu, Nicolas Seiwald, Xaver Schlager, David Alaba; Marcel Sabitzer, Christoph Baumgartner; Marko Arnautovic.
SUBS: Alexander Schlager, Niklas Hedl, Romano Schmid, Florian Kainz, Florian Grillitsch, Muhammed Cham, Phillipp Mwene, Michael Gregoritsch.
ITALY (3-4-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Federico Gatti, Leonardo Bonucci, Francesco Acerbi; Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Marco Verratti, Nicolo Barella, Federico Dimarco; Matteo Politano, Giacomo Raspadori, Vincenzo Grifo.
SUBS: Alex Meret, Ivan Provedel, Andrea Pinamonti, Fabiano Parisi, Samuele Ricci, Fabio Miretti, Matteo Pessina, Simone Pafundi, Nicolo Zaniolo, Federico Chiesa, Giorgio Scalvini, Guglielmo Vicario, Wilfried Gnonto, Alessandro Bastoni.
The players are out on the pitch at Ernst Happel Stadion, and kick-off is now just moments away!
There are numerous options open to Mancini for the second half, and surely there is a chance he will at least change Italy's shape. Chiesa and Zaniolo - plus teenagers Gnonto and Pafundi - are among those awaiting a chance to impress. Austria, meanwhile, would be happy to pick up where they left off.
Both sides are next in action in March, when qualifying for Euro 2024 begins, but between now and then will have to sit back and watch the World Cup from afar; wondering what might have been. On today's showing, there's lots of work for Mancini to do if the Azzurri are to defend their continental crown.
That's all from Vienna today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
