Hello and welcome to the live commentary for the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Liverpool.
Chelsea sacked head coach Graham Potter the day after their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Languishing in 11th place, the Blues have won just three of their 13 Premier League games since the start of 2023, with their loss against Unai Emery’s side their third in their last six fixtures. The 2021 Champions League winners are 12 points away from the top four, but they will move up to ninth position with a win today.
Liverpool were also defeated in their previous fixture, falling to a 4-1 loss at the hands of Premier League Champions Manchester City. As a result, Jurgen Klopp’s men are without an away win in their last three games, last securing all three points on the road when they beat Newcastle United in February. The Reds are four points ahead of Chelsea and could move into sixth place with victory if other results go their way. However, they have not beaten the London club in the league since September 2020.
CHELSEA (3-4-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella; Reece James, Enzo Fernandez, N'Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell; Kai Havertz, Joao Felix, Mateo Kovacic.
CHELSEA SUBS: Edouard Mendy, Benoit Badiashile, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, Noni Madueke.
LIVERPOOL SUBS: Caoimhin Kelleher, James Milner, Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Andrew Robertson, Fabio Carvalho, Arthur, Nathaniel Phillips, Trent Alexander-Arnold.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Konstantinos Tsimikas; Curtis Jones, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson; Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Darwin Nunez.
Chelsea were the better team in the opening 45 minutes. Liverpool look frail defensively and are clearly missing Van Dijk. The Blues are regularly exploiting a backline that has rarely played together and are benefiting from the return of Kante but are not making the most of their chances. James and Chilwell have also been excellent but they have not been found regularly enough. As for Liverpool, they need to make the most of their options off the bench. Salah and Alexander-Arnold need to come on to strengthen the right side.
That's all for today, goodbye.
Stamford Bridge has seen fewer goals than any venue in the Premier League in 2022-23 (28), with Chelsea scoring 16 and conceding 12 in 15 home league games this term. Without a win in three games, the Blues will be looking to find their feet when they head to Wolves on the weekend. As for Liverpool, they too are without a win in three games, with their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League taking a serious hit. Next up, they host league leaders Arsenal.
